Description
Summary:During World War I Stout was a pilot, eventually serving as a lieutenant in the 27th Aero Squadron, First Pursuit Group. In this letter Stout describes waiting for his front line commission and joining the 27th Squadron: "My impression of joining the squadron reminded me very strongly of Auburn and the frat rushes." Stout also discusses his first flight over the German lines: "It was a strange and joyful feeling to be flying over German occupied territory, to see their trenches and their activity, but it was something like the feeling of dreaming about attending a ball in pajamas or walking through the park in B.V.D's . . . I was so uncomfortably conspicuous."
